I have a confession, my favorite television show growing up was “I Dream of Jeannie.” Barbara Eden made living in a bottle so “de rigour,” and the entire backdrop for the show was a study in mid-century modernism. This larger than life film set, at times taking place inside a handpainted gold leaf Jim Beam bottle was not only exaggerated in color and scale but overly saturated style. Hollywoods version of life in the 60’s. So it’s not surprising that I collect design books from the 50’s & 60’s.
Then I was able to relive my favorite era in time when “Down With Love” was released in 2003. This Doris Day/ Rock Hudson romp showed us what life was like in New York City circa 1960 complete with revolving sofas, oversized cigarette holders, pillbox hats and sleek sheath dresses. Life somewhere between a Sloe Gin Fizz and a “Shaken Not Stirred Martini.” “Down with Love” is a flick that I’ve watched more times than I could count on my 60’s inspired pink rotary phone calculator (a cherished DIY gift from one of my followers, thanks Bitsy).
In reality life in the 60’s, was less film set glamour and more about timeless style. Design was not aligned to any particular period but, created to promote stylish living. Most of the interiors highlighted in the vintage copy of House & Gardens Complete Guide to Interior Decoration (1960) that I purchased last weekend (which I’m sharing today), could easily be relevant in 2016. With maybe a few minor tweeks (some seriously outdated rugs in pea green and orange). Timeless style has always been defined by a lack of rules and governed by personal freedom. Soft palettes and clean lines. As the newest addition to my design library proves timeless never goes out of style.
I wanted to share some of my favorite quotes and pictures from the newest addition to my vintage design book collection and “11 Timeless Principles of Design.”
Please feel free to “Pin” & share all of these fabulous quotes from the 60’s!
Also, next week we will be migrating to an entirely new platform…and we are so excited to be adding more writers & columns to keep you inspired!
