A Honeymoon to remember. In the early 19th century Madison, Georgia was described as “the most cultured and aristocratic town on the stagecoach route from Charleston to New Orleans.” And while the past century has brought about many changes, Madison remains steeped in history. Stately homes still line the streets as they did over 150 years ago, poignant reminders of a bygone era.
This year, Madison Town and Country Holiday Tour of Homes (November 30-December 2) will showcase one of Madisons most famous homes, Honeymoon, a historic antebellum home, c.1851 owned by Atlanta Designer, Jimmy Stanton, and Patrick Greico.
Employing Stanton’s signature “one room, one color, one finish” mantra, the rooms were painted and papered in hues of gray, blue, black, and cream. The couple incorporated pieces from Stanton Home Furnishings, Jimmy Stanton’s store in Atlanta, GA with a few family heirlooms including a secretary with beautiful burled grain veneer. All of the light fixtures are modern except for the chandelier in the front north bedroom, which had previously hung in the dining room. Stanton and Greco are revitalizing the landscaping and saving the 19th and early 20th century outbuildings including the center-chimney servant’s cabin and the garage/potting shed, which has been repurposed as a pool house.

Four widely-spaced fluted Doric columns and smooth corner pilasters grace the front of this quintessential Greek Revival house that anchors the southern end of Madison’s historic district. The home was erected in 1851 by Rev. Charles M. Irwin, who had served Madison Baptist since 1848. Irwin was called to Atlanta in 1855 to become pastor of the new Second Baptist Church.
