How To Live Like A Fashion Icon

February 17, 2016

There is much to be learned from the world’s most iconic fashion designers. Over the past century, some of the most polarizing figures in the fashion world have taught us how to dress, decorate & live a stylish life. Fashion and interior design often intersect, from the runway to the residence. What we learn in fashion can often translate into interiors. For the design obsessed we live by the mottos and philosophies of the world’s most beloved fashion trendsetters. It’s not uncommon to see a fashion designer design a room, or an Interior Designer cross over into the world of fashion. Yes, the two worlds have collided, and the result is nothing short of glorious.

Here are a few of style musings and sage advice from some of the most quoted names in fashion, translated into the world of interior design.

Designer/Sophie Paterson

“I’m for style-fashion changes too often.”-Coco Chanel

Our take:: Timeless over trends. I’ve always argued that everything is a trend whether it’s a neutral color palette or gold tone metals. It’s achieving the perfect balance of timelessness & trendy that defines a stylish interior ala Coco Chanel. Create a feeling of serenity and quiet sophistication by using soothing, neutral paint colors. Choose furnishings with clean lines, always mix antiques and modern. An interior should look evolved and never staged.

“Elegance is not standing out, but being remembered.” —Giorgio Armani

Our take:: Be timelessly trendy. Stay away from too much bling or over the top design elements. Avoid overly graphic patterns in rugs or pillows, and limit opposing patterns or color. The most memorable interiors are elegant & timeless…

fashion-red

All my life I’ve pursued the perfect red.”-Diana Vreeland

Our take :: Designers know red packs quite a statement. It can add vitality & passion to a room, but it’s certainly not for the faint of heart. High-powered oranges give off a modern vibe while medium tones are more refined & classic (think Hermes orange). Maroon and Burgandy’s bring an old world flair and are perfect in a library, powder room or drawing room (if you are lucky enough to live in a castle).

“I’ve long believed that the eye runs naturally from the catwalk to the kitchen.”-Anna Wintour

Our Take :: There is a distinct intersection between design & fashion. A dress can become a pillow or inspiration for drapery fabric. The texture of a high-end shoe is reinvented as an artwork frame, a fringe skirt becomes a lampshade. What might seem too avant-garde on the high-fashion runway will eventually be reinterpreted for the interiors market…

fashion-classic

Designer/ Linda Ruderman

“Pearls are always appropriate.”- Jackie Onassis

Our Take:: The classic staple for the well-heeled is a strand of pearls. They are elegant & sophisticated, and always appropriate. As with fashion, imagine an interior inspired by  pearls, it would be purely classic & always stylish.

Designer/ Todd Romano

“My fashion advice is to have a flattering mirror & forget about it.”-Vivienne Westwood

Our Take:: Not only are the mirrors the windows to the soul, but they also reflect light into dark corners, create the illusion of doors & open up a room. And yes, a flattering mirror can also satisfy our vanity.

fashion-black

“I think in black.”-Gareth Pugh

Our Take:: Black is timeless. It can be sleek, modern or dark & moody. It’s highlights moldings or architectures, and it’s the perfect backdrop. Black is the ultimate diva of design. It’s made women look fabulous for centuries, and it can do the same for our homes.

“An interior is a natural projection of the soul.”-Coco Chanel

Our take: From Coco we’ve learned that our homes should nurture our souls, and the first step toward achieving a “soulful interior” is clearing out the clutter and getting rid of those items that create a negative environment. Rather surround yourself with meaningful objects which inject energy back into a room and feeds the soul.

We hope you are inspired to live stylishly!
