As 2017 approaches we must bid a fond farewell to 2016, blowing a kiss to old trends while celebrating the new. In the world of design, 2016 will long be remembered as the year of pastels (Pantone’s Rose Quartz & Serenity), both touted as grown-up versions of colors previously associated with the younger set. These color twins cast a calming and peaceful glow over fashion & furnishings, and as their reign ends, they are ushering in rich, vibrant jewel tones for 2017. But, the “changing of the color guard” is just the beginning of what to expect in the new year!

Recently, I was part of the High Point Market Design Bloggers Tour in partnership with Esteem Media. From fabric to furnishings (and color of course) our two-day tour was a complete immersion into the latest collections & trends. After visiting 17 showrooms and reviewing countless photos I’m recapping the biggest trends and collection highlights from the High Point Market Fall 2016!
So what can we expect to see in 2017?
1//Pops of Color-Pantone recently announced “Greenery” as the 2017 “Color of the Year,” although we saw hints of it earlier in the year. Also, look for dark, dramatic and slightly moody hues & zesty yellow-green, the color of “renewal.” It’s being used in pillows, upholstery, wallpapers, and paint providing an opportunity to bring in colors from the outdoors! We are also saying goodbye to the wispy pastels of 2016 and welcoming gemstone tones, vibrant with bold saturations. From vivid pinks to emerald greens, expect rich tones to bring dynamism into the New Year.

2//Metals-We will say farewell to copper and rose gold, and welcome back polished nickels and silvers! Also, expect burnished metals such as brass and chrome will make their way onto the design stage. We’ll see metals paired with organic materials such as wood with chrome, brass with marble, and other natural elements married with modern man-made materials. Companies like Bernhardt, Eichholtz and Sho Modern were some of the masters of mixing metals at High Point Market this year.

3//Going Global-2017 rings in a year of cultural influences, from Nordic to Tribal prints, with fringes and macrame playing a part on the Global design stage. Scandinavian looks continue to be popular- clean, simple and minimal with rustic or ethnic texture. Of special note is an emerging style I like to call “Bohemian Modern,” which creates the illusion of a life well traveled from organic textures to carefree fringes. Look for Tribal prints such as Oushak rugs in ottomans and pillows to add an ethnic flair to interior styles from Modern to Traditional as people connect with the global community. Companies such as Lee Industries, and Huntington House featured eye-catching Ousak and tribal prints in their collections…

4//Mid-Century Modern-Updated versions of mid-century inspired designs were seen in many collections. Thayer Coggin, a well known maker of modern furniture, (including iconic designers such as Milo Baughman), still manufactures some of the best examples of modern furnishings from couches to chairs for over 60 years.

5//Liveable Fabrics-One company leading the “fabric revolution” is Crypton fabric who was at the forefront of many collections. 6//Innovative Veneers-The advances in wood veneers over the past few years have been impressive. Companies such as Ameriwood, offer handpainted veneers and textured wood grains for the budget minded that realistically mimic the real thing. On the opposite end of the design spectrum, Century Furniture and Bernhardt were standouts with intricately patterned wood grains both machine and man-made. Look for more jaw-dropping veneers in 2017!

7//Outdoor Living-What’s hot in outdoor living? Contemporary continues designed with modern profiles and mixed with high gloss metallic finishes. Matte blacks and white are trending in outdoor furnishings and the appearance of one-of-a-kind pieces are as popular with indoor furnishings as they are for outdoor. Outdoor entertaining continues to be a popular trend with more innovative features being introduced for 2017!

8//Boutique & Artisan Collections-Moving forward we will continue to see boutique companies emerge with distinctive offerings, from trims to furnishings. They may be small, but the impact they are making in the interiors market is big. Some standouts from Market were Pyar & Company, which recently introduced an exclusive trim collection in partnership with interior designer, Michelle Workman. This visually stunning collection was inspired by garments worn by respective queens, drawing on the “visual, social and historical drama” created by Queens Isabella and Elizabeth. Another market favorite was Joanie Designs bringing us uniquely designed custom sofas and chairs created from vibrant fabrics sourced from all over the world. Brooklyn-based designer, Katy Skelton wowed us with her “modern and nostalgic pieces” from lighting to casegoods.
