On the hunt for all things beautiful and inspiring, I stumbled across a Showhouse last weekend. Although, in reality, it involved a carefully orchestrated plan on my part. Who would give up a day of design for a gourmet meal at a swanky eaterie? Certainly, not me. So Mr. B. and I spent an afternoon inside a “Showhouse” aka model home. Over the past several years, builders across America have stepped up the “design game,” creating truly spectacular examples of great design. All housed under one roof. In some cases, enlisting well-known design talent to promote communities while “wowing” potential buyers.
Such is the case with a home designed by Michael Morris of Monte Hewitt. In fact, I’m using some of the pictures I took recently to punctuate a few of my favorite tips on achieving a timeless and luxurious look. Here are a few ways to achieve a look that doesn’t feel like it has an expiration date looming around the corner…
- Ceilings-Look Up. Yes, to the fifth wall, aka the ceiling. While wallpaper and paint certainly create visual interest, moldings are always a favorite and more permanent option for creating architectural interest and timeless appeal. Since I practice what I preach, most of the ceilings in our home have a wood treatment. Beams, paneling or decorative moldings. Expensive? Yes. However, in the end, a worthy investment in the value, look and feel of our home.

2. Artistic Tiled Floors-Do you have a small lackluster bathroom? Use patterned tile on the floor. It adds richness and a feeling of luxury even if the walls & fixtures are plain. “Go for the bold.” Tiled floors have the same effect as using an eye-catching rug. Choose tiles that have traditional patterns in a neutral palette for long term appeal.

3. Mirrors- I’m obsessed with mirrors. They not only reflect light and “air” back into a room but also objects. Creating a virtual still life. Years ago when I was in design school one of my teachers had this to say “Mirrors can be a designer’s best friend, but don’t forget to take into account what is reflecting back.” I’ve always remembered that bit of design advice, and truer words have never been spoken. I’ve seen mirrors reflect parking lots, bad design, and awkward spaces in a home. So place them with purpose, or use a piece of artwork.

4. Hardware- Do not scrimp on door & cabinet hardware. Ever. Buying quality hardware is a worthy investment. Every time. Think of it as a piece of statement jewelry on an expensive outfit (your home being the outfit). Having eye-catching hardware goes a long way in creating a luxury “look” in your home.

5. Wood Tones-As most designers know, mixing wood tones is truly an artform. An evolved interior involves layers of texture, pattern and a mix of well-curated styles. Using varying tones of woods creates an interesting and visually appealing look. An artful mix that keeps a timeless interior current and up-to-date.

6. Pattern-We’ve all walked into homes that have the look of a “design circus.” A riotous and unsettling explosion of color. For a timeless look, keep patterns to a minimum. Believe it or not, you can achieve a sophisticated interior by layering solid colors with subtle pops of pattern. Color relationships are key in creating a timeless interior. In fact, bold colors paired with softer grays or neutrals will take it down a notch. Using pattern takes commitment and a trained eye. While I love an injection of pattern into a room, exercising careful restraint is the hallmark of timelessness and liveability.

7. Mixing Periods & Styles-This is the number one rule when creating a timeless, storied interior. Marry classic with contemporary. Rustic with chrome. 19th century with 21st century. Traditional touches provide a visual story giving a sense of history, creating tension between new and old, modern with antiques. Interiors should reflect the authentic story of the inhabitants not that of a big box store.
