Where in the World is the “Ace of Space”?

I thought this would be an appropriate title for my absence over the past 2 weeks. Believe me I wish I could have blogged, in fact last week I really did try, but I was on an island. I mean really on an island. I couldn’t get internet, had limited cell service and was basically stranded with the family. Three of us crammed like sardines into a hotel room overlooking the ocean. Feel bad for me yet? You shouldn’t. We had an incredible view, and only lacked space because “The Fashionista” picked up one of my many bad habits (of which one happens to involve luggage), ONE suitcase for shoes, ONE for clothes, ONE for hats, and ONE that contains everything you need to lounge poolside ie cover-ups, shoes to match the cover-ups, bathing suits to match the shoes and cover-ups, and a bag that contains bottles of sunscreen. We pretty much have every sunscreen between the numbers of 1-70. Yup, I know that’s a lot of sunscreen, but being prepared is what motherhood is all about.

So while we were boating, taking side trips and sweating (okay glowing) in the humidity of the deep south, I gave up on trying to get a blog post out, you can only climb so many trees to get WIFI. My biggest disappointment was not getting more shots of some of the most incredible “beach houses” along the way. Why? Because Mr. B has lost patience with my slight trespassing to get blog worthy snapshots. My explanation? Why would someone build a beautiful house if they didn’t want you to actually get up close and personal? In fact, after we were locked behind the gates of a palatial seaside home during an off road excursion, he actually didn’t say a word. For about 3 hours. The gates were open, the live oaks lining the driveway beckoned me to ride my bike up through the elaborate wrought iron gates to a home that left me as breathless as the huge hill I had to “huff and puff” up to get there. So after snapping a few pictures, and hearing Mr. B. say “Can we go now? Someone is going to see us.” over and over in a continuous annoying loop, I gave in and back down the driveway we went only to find out that the gates had closed. I was trapped with a husband whose look just about turned me into an icicle, and a small child who kept repeating “I have to go potty.” Uh…oh. Believe me automatic gate sensors do not recognize trespassing tourists on bikes. So I had to use the intercom to call up to the main house.

Me-“Uh, hi, we are down at the main gate and somehow we got locked in.”

The Voice-“Locked in?” (What are we now playing the Elementary School game of repeating everything I say?).

Me-“Yes, we got lost.”

The Voice- “You got lost? You’re ON private property. Do you know you are trespassing?” (Of course I did. But, was it really necessary to remind Mr. B.? Now, I’m really starting to get a little irritated).

Me-“We were trying to find a bathroom because my daughter has to go to potty.” (Hey, I thought this would seal the deal and I would get an automatic invitation in…).

Mr. B.’s look clearly said “Your days of trespassing have come to an end, and no shopping for a month.” Seriously though why would you build an amazingly beautiful property if you didn’t want people to see it? So it’s all my fault? That home called to me like a piece of chocolate at the tail end of a stress filled day. The gates magically opened and on the otherside was freedom, and a child who decided she really didn’t have to go potty, and a husband who thought riding one mile ahead of me was punishment (Did I feel bad? Not at all…I actually got to enjoy the view and take some “photo-stops”).  Next week I’ll be back to the world of design, after a trip to NY with the Fashionista in tow. So here is a peek into our vacation paradise…unfortunately minus any homes behind gates or walls.

Room with a view…….life is good. Our picture perfect postcard of a picture perfect vacation.

The summer porch at a hotel in Palmetto Bluff…and yes I had a Mint Julep(s).

Just another sunset in paradise, layered in shades of blue. If only I could capture this on canvas.

A “shrimper” out on our afternoon sail…

The last sunset, and the most perfect one.
